Orthopaedics

Derived from the Latin words “orthos” meaning straight and “paideion” meaning children Orthopaedics is the branch of medicine that deals with problems relating to the musculoskeletal system. Contrary to its name people of any age may be affected by orthopaedic problems and the vast majority of us will require the help of an orthopaedic specialist at some point during our lifetime.

The musculoskeletal system comprises bones which articulate with each other at joints, are cushioned by cartilage and held together by ligaments. Muscles make the skeleton move and are attached to bones via tendons and controlled by nerves. Orthopaedic surgeons specialise in the surgical and non-surgical care of this very complex and dynamic system.

At Surrey Total Health we have a team of orthopaedic surgeons who have a range of surgical expertise and work closely with our consultant rheumatologist and rehabilitation specialist to manage a wide range of common musculoskeletal problems.

Treatment of hip and knee pain

The first step in managing hip or knee pain is to determine what is causing the pain. Our doctors will sit down with you and discuss your symptoms and organise any further tests that they think are necessary.

Once they have established the most likely cause of your pain they will discuss appropriate treatment including non-surgical and surgical options.

The majority of people with hip or knee pain will be offered non-surgical treatment in the first instance. Non-surgical treatment of hip pain may include
